Well, I laugh a lot about having a black thumb, but I am a little bit proud of our family for managing to not kill all these vegetables!
I was watching some of the grandkids yesterday and we needed to go check on the ugly garden and see what needed picked. So, I gathered them all up and we headed over. I grabbed the bag I’ve been using to carry cucumbers, and then I looked back to see Eva coming along behind with the toy shopping cart. How appropriate! So, we went shopping for cucumbers and Roma tomatoes! This idea led to a good discussion on how much we pay for these vegetables at the store vs. how much we pay for them when we grow them our selves. (I like to sneak in some homeschool lessons when they don’t feel too much like lessons)
Today, the rest of the grands are traveling toward “home” and my house will soon be full and noisy. We will not eat completely home-grown food, we will not gather eggs from any chickens in our yard – BUT, we did go shopping in our garden and I did begin the process of teaching Eva how to make good biscuits. Tomorrow we might put up some salsa.
It may take time, I am not getting any younger, but the idea of feeding my family with stuff we grew ourselves is getting settled deep within me. I won’t be swearing off Pizza, pizza! anytime soon, but there are days when the simple life appeals strongly!
P.S. The nice pretty tall corn and any neat rows you may see – belong to my neighbor who knows what he’s doing! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
