Small steps

I was trying to make taco soup today.  I had actually been to the grocery store to get all of the ingredients.  But, those who know me will not be surprised, I forgot one of the ingredients.  Seriously, it isn’t like there are that many ingredients to begin with.

So, I was on my out to go get two cans of stewed tomatoes when I suddenly remembered that I actually had canned tomatoes – that I canned myself!

I laughed when I looked at the strangeness of the situation.  I had just gone to Wal-mart and picked up several types of canned beans.  This trip by a woman who is trying to work on being more farm centered, farm to table, grow it ourselves, make it ourselves to buy canned food and ground beef.  The very allure of taco soup is the complete quickness of the meal.  30  minutes tops!  Fairly healthy!   Not farm to table healthy, but healthy.

So, my cooking life mirrors my actual life right now.  One foot in Wal-mart, one foot in the farm.  So, I laughed as I added my home canned tomatoes to the otherwise Wal-mart taco soup.  And, I laughed.

A couple of hours after our taco soup, I recieved the news that the butcher shop was ready for us to tell them how we wanted them to package up our pork.  That was another first.  One step closer to farm life. . . it is a journey remember?
