lawnmowers and weed-eaters

I have come to truly appreciate the lawn-mowing ability of a few cows.  I have even begun to appreciate my husband’s drive to use rotational grazing to achieve that purpose.  But, it is still work moving them around to new pasture every few days.  One day, when the farm is all farmable again and we have fence where we want it, it will not be so cumbersome.

For now, we (mostly farmer man) have to stay one field ahead of the cows.Jim fencing from grass

Fencing is a family affair.

At least this time the fence was pretty easy, temporary, electric fence.  I do hate having to worry about getting shocked, but running it is SO MUCH EASIER! – but not easy.   We did draw a few raised eyebrows when we ran electric netting up near our little country road.  Up til now, most of the fencing has been back on the property.  Now we are not only entertaining our one neighbor man, but are up in the front field for all the veteran farmers to see.  In a lot I said would NOT be for livestock.  Well, ya know – farmer man is pretty sweet and convincing sometimes.  It didn’t seem reasonable to cut it with the lawn mower when we don’t use it and we have cows that need some good quality grazing pasture!  Plus, in spite of what he may say – I actually want his life to be easier, not harder!   NOT SO EASY THAT I AM LETTING THE IN THE FRONT YARD – sweetheart!

The other good part of this deal is the “weed eater” crew!  That is their purpose!   I don’t milk these goats, I am not selling them for meat – at least not these.  They are some pretty good weed eaters.  They are not crazy about the cows, but they will tolerate each other and co-exist when needed.  We will see if they can clear my creek bed this week.  I would sure rather feed goats than to run the weed eater!  I’m not nearly as fond of that thing as farmer man is!  Besides, Ruby and Charlie are much cuter!weedeaters

I think our little temporary electric netting looks pretty pitiful up against that “fence envy” fence across the road – but we will work our way up to the pretty stuff – hopefully.  At least on the front of the property.
