Priorities!!

Oh how I needed to see the sunshine of spring this year! It has been beautiful! And, somehow the sunshine seemed to help me shake off the winter blah for the most part.

Farming is a bit complicated right now. Farmer Man is still working to get back to some kind of normal after a pretty rough few months. So decisions have to be made about the best use of our time and his energy. We have a high-tunnel that needs planted, 20 some trees down on the fence making some areas off limits to the escape artists, we need to decide whether or not to attempt Farmer Man’s beloved cows this year, and the list goes on. So, however much this is a farming blog – it is also – how to farm through the realities of life blog.

Wide open fence – does NOT make us a good neighbor! Closed off the top pasture!

The biggest change on the farm right now is that we sold 18 goats. I am pretty sure it was a God thing. Other than a few short minutes last weekend when I panicked and allowed myself to “what if” for entirely too long – I have peace about the decision. Someone got a really great herd of weed-eaters and I can breathe a little easier. Counting 10 goats, feeding 10 goats, treating 10 goats – all much easier than 28 goats. And, we kept mostly the originals – the ones that aren’t usually into too much trouble. (Make no mistake, I’m sure they are plotting some kind of mischief!)

More manageable herd of 10

Even the process of getting them sold was a big challenge! I surely didn’t want to send the babies out without making sure they were in tip-top shape. My sister and brother in law have saved our behinds a million times through these last few months and last Friday was no exception. We trimmed 28 sets of goat feet, gave 28 doses of CDT (vaccine), gave 28 doses of wormer, and put collars on the ones that needed them. That is absolutely not on the list of jobs Farmer Man is up to, so we had a busy, busy afternoon! And the following day, loaded up 18 goats into a trailer and hopefully made someone very happy. It did make me happy, I feel a bit less stressed!

No matter how many crazy things are going on around here, the best part of it all for me is when the kids and grands come to visit. So Easter was a great day! We had a bunch of us together IN church!!! And, we had brunch at the farm – where we enjoyed the gorgeous weather and lots of laughs. We missed Aaron and Candice, and I didn’t get photos of Sarah and Lexie – but it was the kind of day that was made for the farm. Noise, creek water, sugar, candy papers, laughter, and chaos. So, our normal!

God is good, All the time! One day at a time, we farm.
