January farming

It’s mud season! We have made progress toward working around the mud. Feeding the goats in the backyard makes it muddy – but on the upside I do not have to actually step foot in the mud to feed the goats.

So, from the protection of the back porch, I pour the goat feed. If I happen to be enjoying a nice cup of cocoa and relaxing for a few minutes past dawn – they will remind me of my responsibilities and suggest strongly that feeding them should come first. There is a drawback to allowing them to be able to see in the windows!

We figured out a way to feed the round bale hay under a cover and without having to muddy up the barnyard with the tractor as much. They seem to be happy to eat the hay from underneath, and so far, it seems to not churn up as much mud. Go us!

They still waste A LOT of hay!

I actually sold two goats! Yay me! The guys at the Farm Service Center will be impressed, I’m pretty sure they thought all of them would be pets forever.

The Christmas season was a blur, but low stress and enjoyable. My husband and family had me a surprise birthday party which was amazing and made me feel loved and appreciated by a large group of people. After the big party, we stole away to our favorite Amish country cabin Red Cottage Hideaway for a quiet getaway and a show!

The family Christmas at the farm house was loud and obnoxious as it should be – full of family games, one generation engaging the younger in nerf battles, ping-pong, bey-blades, and conversation. The farm in Mom’s village was well represented – thanks sister! And a good time was had by all – I think!

The decorations are down now, and normal life continues.

Goats LOVE pine needles! One reason I still do a real tree!

The construction will begin again soon and contractor help may be enlisted (please, please please). I had a whole year off from gardening, so I am slowly considering what plants I am willing to grow this year so I can order seeds. I can’t seriously believe I am going to try seeds again! And, I am contemplating taking the bread baking to the next level – sourdough and whole grains. We shall see.

Thanks for being a part of our journey, new things are always afoot at the farm.
